B

en started teaching music in 1988. He offers classical music lessons for violin and viola, and also instructs students in bluegrass, jazz, rock, Old-Time and other styles of fiddling. In addition to violin, viola and fiddle, Barnes teaches guitar, singing, music theory, composition, songwriting, transcription, scoring, arranging, and “chart” writing (also known as lead sheets). Group violin, viola, guitar and mixed instruments classes are available. Coaching for Rock ’n’ Roll, Bluegrass and Jazz bands. as well as classical chamber music ensembles can be scheduled.

All levels of experience and ages of students are welcome in his studio. Lessons are held in his studio or your home. A recital for his young students is held at the end of each school year. This is a casual and friendly recital format. Recitals are also scheduled for adults wishing to perform music for their friends.

Ben’s younger beginning students are instructed in the Suzuki method. Adult beginners learn from a method called Strictly Strings. Intermediate and advanced students work concertos, sonatas, technical studies, Jazz standards, Rock ’n’ Roll songs, and Fiddlin’ & Flatpickin’ style Bluegrass/Old-Time tunes. Ben arranges any music a students wishes to play. The arrangements are always made “ability appropriate” for the skill level, age and experience of the student. Ben teaches some students how to use computer software for writing sheet-music and producing sound recordings.

If you are interested in learning how to play violin, viola or the guitar, Ben can make recommendations on where to rent instruments and purchase materials that will be needed for the music lessons. You can contact him through this website. Startup costs are nominal.

Ben’s 2019 rates are $60 for an hour and 50 dollars for lessons 45 minutes in length. When traveling to a student’s home, Ben requires an additional $20 travel fee. Prices may be subject to change. His rates are very competitive, but sliding scale tuition will be considered based on financial need, quantity of tuition paid in advance and Benjamin’s availability.
